Is antivirus and antispam protection necessary? And is it worthwhile?
According to current studies and data security experts, damage caused by computer viruses cost tens of millions of $$$ per year. It includes the costs of disinfection, data recovery, data loss, and bandwidth and productivity loss.
Significant losses are caused by inconvenient spam, which distracts many users when using their everyday electronic communication. Current studies indicate that more than fifty percent of e-mails flowing through the Internet are spam.
The accessible statistics suggest that the total e-mail traffic represents an average of 70 % of incoming messages as spam and about 10 % contains a virus. If we presume, that the standard user is spending five minutes per day on spam deletion then in a corporation employing one thousand people 83 man-hours per day is wasted on spam deletion. This equates to approximately 1.660 man-hours per month. If we presume that the cost of one man-hour is $1 , we reach the total cost of $1.660 per month and $19.920 per year. If we use the example of a corporation employing 50 people only, this equates to a total cost of $2,000 per year.
